Guys, I stumbled onto a diamond in the rough in Oklahoma—60 big, stout, broody Brahman heifers. These girls are only 2 1/2 years old, coming threes, and I mean EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY GENTLE.
One has already calved with a nice F1 Braford calf at side, and the rest should start calving soon. Bulls were turned out in February.
These girls have basically been dumped out on pasture and left alone. Low-maintenance, easy-keeping cattle that haven’t been pampered.
Remember, guys, these are 2 1/2-year-olds. I always get a kick out of somebody telling me, “I want middle-aged cows.” My first question is WHY? Good middle-aged cows aren’t that much cheaper than good young females, and you’re giving up years of production.
Buy the young ones and let them work for you. Take care of females like these and you’ve got the opportunity for a whole lot of productive years ahead of you. That’s where I see the investment.
