A LETTER FROM RED HAWK — PROFESSIONAL ARISTOCRASS SEEKING SUITABLE STAFF. Hello, humans. My name is Red Hawk, although “Your Lordship” may be considered once we know one another better. I am a registered American Mammoth Jackstock gelding, bred by Garrett Mammoth Jackstock in Oklahoma. I was born in November 2018, stand a substantial 14.2 hands, and wear a particularly handsome shade of red sorrel. I have excellent conformation, magnificent ears, and the composed expression of someone who already knows he is usually the smartest individual present. I am not desperate to belong to everyone. I am looking for my person. At first, I can appear rather stoic. Reserved. Dignified. Perhaps mildly judgmental. I believe trust should be earned, relationships should mean something, and strangers should not assume we are best friends simply because they arrived carrying cookies. But once I understand you and decide you are safe? I melt. I become sweet, affectionate, willing, and deeply devoted. I enjoy attention, appreciate a job, and make a wonderful partner for someone who treats me with patience, fairness, and respect. I may take a little time to bond, but once I do, I am completely committed. I also have considerably more than a handsome face and impressive ears. I have logged over 1,000 ridden miles through rough trails, public roads, hills, water crossings, parades, organized rides, and varied terrain. I ride alone or in groups with horses, donkeys, and wagons. My résumé includes San Antonio Rodeo Days rides and Bishop Mule Days, where I encountered heavy foot traffic, dogs, mopeds, wagons, teams, water trucks, and enough human commotion to reinforce my belief that donkeys are generally the more sensible species. I am confident around road traffic and tolerant of dogs, both leashed and loose. I have ridden around children playing basketball, through busy public environments, and among large mixed groups. Under saddle, I listen well and am a steady, willing riding partner. I do not bolt, buck, or rear. I am sure-footed, sensible, and willing to go through just about anything my rider reasonably asks of me. I am naturally gaited and offer a smooth single-foot gait, sometimes called the “donkey shuffle.” I can travel at speed when asked, although I personally prefer a calm, comfortable walk. It allows everyone more time to admire me. I cross water when necessary. I simply prefer to verify that it is, in fact, necessary. I trailer well and load into different types of trailers. Occasionally, I may pause to review the travel arrangements, but patient encouragement usually settles the matter. Reckless enthusiasm is for Golden Retrievers. I am barefoot, current on Coggins and vaccinations, have my teeth checked annually, and have no known health or soundness issues. I can be handled, groomed, saddled, and touched all over without issue. My regular handlers are able to pick up and handle my feet without much trouble, and I have never offered to kick during ordinary daily handling. I do not immediately enjoy unfamiliar people handling my ears. Once I know and trust someone, I become much more accepting, but I prefer that new acquaintances earn access to the royal ears rather than grabbing first and introducing themselves later. My only significant handling challenge has been during actual farrier appointments. I have had successful farrier sessions, but I have also become stressed and kicked during a recent attempt. This behavior has been specific to the farrier situation and has not occurred during routine handling or when my regular handlers pick up my feet. I therefore need an owner willing to continue building positive, consistent farrier experiences with patience and a knowledgeable professional. This does not make me dangerous or difficult in everyday life. It simply means there is one area of my training that still needs thoughtful improvement. Under saddle, I have safely carried riders of varying experience levels and have an enormous amount of proven real-world experience. My ideal owner will appreciate an intelligent, experienced riding donkey and understand that a meaningful partnership is built rather than demanded. I am not being offered as a lifeless push-button machine.
